Another HappenStance Scoop

I’ve just found out that my poem Hangover Hotel has been Highly Commended, taking 6th place, in the Poetry on the Lake Competition 2007, judged by John Hartley Williams. There were over three hundred entries.

Only the top four win a prize. It’s nice to get a commendation, but one of these days it would nice to win something! Can’t complain, I suppose…

Congratulations, Rob. I always think the best thing about a competition placing is knowing you've impressed a judge you respect. Although money is nice too!
The title sounds familiar. Was it a NaPoWriMo poem too?

Well done, Rob. Good poem, that one.

Cheers.

It wasn't a NaPo poem, but I read it at StAnza, so you might have seen the setlist on this blog, Matt.

I was indeed pleased, as I like some of JHW's stuff, and his book Teach Yourself Writing Poetry, written with Matthew Sweeney, taught me a vast amount when I was beginning to learn how to write. It's easily the best book of its kind. Put it this way, I hadn't succeeded in publishing anything before I read it, but poems I wrote very soon afterwards were accepted by New Writing Scotland. Something clicked.

Glad you liked that one, Andy!

Rob, congratulations - it's fantastic to get recognition in a competition.

And thanks for the book recommendation - I love stocking up on those types of books and intend to get it as part of my holiday reading. : ) I like Matthew Sweeney as well.

Thanks!

I needed the thumbs-up. I've had a steady flow of rejection slips recently. Indeed, Hangover Hotel, before I entered it for the competition, had been rejected by UK print magazines.

Liz, the book is excellent. I still find it useful from time to time, years on from when I first read it.

Well done. I hope you win something soon, I can empathise from the photography stand point.

Thanks, apprentice.

I've entered four competitions this year - two of them were free. I've just paid to enter a fifth. Always a lottery.
