Here's to 2009

Well, I decided I’d had enough of messing about with my poetry collection manuscript and submitted it. I suspect I’ve left a few poems out that should have been in, but perhaps not. I have plenty of poems, but wanted to choose only the best. However, these decisions are never easy to make.

Anyway, it’s been accepted! Salt are going to be publish it sometime in 2009. Its provisional title is The Opposite of Cabbage (from a line in one of the poems). I had to either add a few pages or cut a few pages and I chose to cut. That’s very much my nature when it comes to poems – I’ll cut every time.

I’ve really enjoyed many Salt books in the last few years, but never believed I would be part of that list. It’s a good feeling though…

If 'cabbage' was one of the four humours, I'd say the opposite was 'phlegmatic'. Or possibly 'radish'.

Well done rob. I have one coming out next yr as well, so maybe we could review each others?

Don't worry I have seen enough of your work to know I won't be struggling to make us both look like we know what we're doing.

Yr line,

Your soul has three names;
the mirror, the holdall, the word
you dare not read...

it was when I took one of your poems and close read it, that it dawned on me that I wouldn't have to lie to contextualise you as a very good poet. And what clinched it, was when I heard a recording of you, which was like KEB when i heard her. I am not being funny, but we can all be glib and get carried away in thinking we have been looking properly when we have been to quick to try and see the negative because of petty human jealousies; but as long as we can be honest, admit this is part of human life, at least we have a chance of recognising it when it rears it's head.

My latest one was with Laird when I read him in the Guardian on Saturday, whose work - in my mind - I have always wanted to find fault with (even though my instinct couldn't really justify it), just because of who he is, because of a deficit in me; and it was only when I came to use this piece as the springboard into a piece of writing, a fairer, more accurate assessment appeared on the page as i composed, and by the end discovedred this fault in me, simply because the intellectual-emotional imaginative act and linguistic creation, the language-object i ended up with, was far more in synch and sympathy with this fellow colleague in humanity.

Anway, congratulations, go knock 'em dead..

Great news, Rob - look forward to reading and, if possible, reviewing it.

Thanks again, folks.

Andy, the free banana idea (there is a free banana in one of the poems, in case anyone is wondering) might not work with postal delivery, but...I don't know...maybe Salt could give away a free banana with the hundredth, two hundredth, three hundredth etc copy sold. That shouldn't cost too much!
