I was walking home yesterday afternoon and saw something strange – a lollipop man. Nothing strange about that in itself, but a) he was staffing a pedestrian crossing and allowed people to cross when there was a green man i.e. when people crossed in any case, and b) he was listening to music through earphones – surely that can’t be allowed!

We've got one lollipop person here who is excellent - helps us OAPs to cross, as well as the children, always has time for a friendly chat. Another one skulks in a corner reading a book, barely takes the time to raise her head from it and press the crossing point button for a child, never crosses anyone not a school pupil ...
OK, it's not a well-paid job, but some people do it well, and others don't.
Yes, I thought that listening to music through earphones might be dangerous. Surely you need to be fully aware of trafffic noise etc.
