Midges

And today, to my complete surprise, my poem, Midges (originally published in Poetry Scotland), is featured in the poetry blog of The Herald, Scotland’s biggest broadsheet newspaper. I don’t know if it’s in the print edition or not. I suppose I should buy a copy and take a look.

The Herald Poetry Blog started only a few days ago and features a new poem more or less every day. It should make good reading as time goes on.

***update: I got a print copy of the Herald and indeed, the poem is there too on page 21 - below the obituaries!

Congratulations. How incredible to get a poem in the newspaper with absolutely no effort on your part.

Below the obits... no matter, well done. Getting into the paper, hmm, Does this augur well for the Guardian - I'd say so ;)

Eloise - yes, I wish it were normally so easy!

Barbara - the poetry being below the obituaries is a great poetic image, I think. But I say that tongue-in-cheek, as The Herald are one of the few, perhaps the only, national newspaper to carry a daily poem, so they deserve a big round of applause.

Yes, it's terrific that The Herald has Lesley Duncan's column, and I think she's been doing it for 7 years, so she's published a large volume of poetry in those years. I'm not sure if she keeps a score sheet of the poets she's published, but Jim C Wilson told me recently that he's had 36 poems in it. Only downside is that she can't forewarn poets. Keep a network of Herald-buying friends is my advice.

Cheers, Harry.

Colin, I must admit, I've never submitted anything to The Herald. Not for any reason, it's just never occurred to me. It's good there's the daily blog now too.

I've never submitted anything either, but she gets review copies of my collections, and she usually puts in one or two poems when that happens. (I'm not into double figures yet though).

Congratulations, Rob! Great to get out there to such a big readership.

Congratulations, Rob. That's great!

I don't think Lesley Duncan takes submissions for the column. As far as I remember, all the poems have come from other publications or competitions.

Thanks.

Andy - I guess, in that case, my appearance could be my first and last.

Yes you can submit to lesley as Poetry Editor of The herald, 195 Albion ST Glasgow.
the poems on the blog are the same ones that go in the paper on that day. So you can tell if you have one in the paper by checking the blog.
We've had so many PS poems in the paper, one or two each issue, we could make an anthology from them!
I think Lesley would appreicate some comments on her blog.
cheers

Cheers, Sally. I'll try to comment on Lesley's blog. I enjoyed the Marvell and the ...Carruth...yesterday.
