This is Love

Last night my neighbours decided to party until 3am. In one room they had prog rock. In another room, there was a karaoke machine. I particularly remember some boring prog band around 2am while the rest of the family howled Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love at the top of their voices.

I got woken up at 7.30am, went to the living room, which is next to their bedroom, and played this, from PJ Harvey, at a loud volume.

This is not love, Rob. I listened to it, and it's verging on 'cruel and unusual punishment'.

Mind you, I sympathise with the noise problem. It was noisy neighbours that finally persuaded my other half that we should move to a wee detached bungalow in Sunny Dunny. Bliss.

Colin, I really do love PJ Harvey! But she is an acquired taste...

Our neighbours are actually quite nice people. But as I had to get up early, as my wife had to give two performances in the Edinburgh People's Theatre pantomime, and as I had an energetic 4-year-old to chase after all Boxing Day, I thought that it was only fair our neighbours didn't sleep through the morning.

Way to go Rob! And it is tough love. Shostakovich also works.

Reminds me of our old neighbours when they got a karaoke machine for the kids for Chistmas one year... *shudders*

Watch out for the new year party they will probably have - or is that a Hootenanny in your parts?

I like PJ, but I prefer her 'quieter' songs - I love the duet with Thom Yorke on This Is The Sea or whatever it's called. I admire your bravery in waking your neighbours - I would be afraid of a longstanding vendetta . . .

Well, at New Year, at least we'll be up late too. We can all make noise together.

I don't think my neighbours are the vendetta type (at least I hope not). And nor am I really. But I'll remember Shostakovich in case I ever need him.
