Yes, except the people who happen to write better! But you're right - it's a tough field. Perhaps too tough. I might find something smaller instead. Or, indeed, as well, but make sure I save the best for Wigtown. Thanks for the wise words.

Rob's right, there is no substitute for sheer perseverance :)
The poem in question is quite brilliant. I've never been able to do abstracts without them becoming too self-conscious.
